Dovestones helicopter rescue |
||
|
Dear Saddleworth,
Did you see the Coastguard helicopter over Dovestones today?
It was responding to a hiker in distress in the Ashway Gap area who had unfortunately suffered a broken ankle and was unable to get back down safely.
After being located by police, she was assessed and treated by volunteer Mountain Rescue personnel from Boarshurst station in Greenfield, who immobilised her injury and helped move her to a suitable landing location. From there, a Coastguard helicopter airlifted her from the hills. Thankfully, this incident was resolved quickly, but it highlights an important point. Dovestones is often portrayed on social media as an easy walk, when in reality conditions can change rapidly. Today's wet weather made the terrain challenging, and suitable footwear, warm clothing and waterproofs were essential.
Please plan ahead and come prepared before heading into the hills.
